External Storage and Backups

This past weekend, I had yet another external storage drive crash.  As a designer, I keep my entire collection of work (i.e. proposals, designs, documents, etc) on external drives...my Apple G5 just doesn’t have the amount of storage I need.  Unfortunately, I’ve had external drive crashes and malfunctions a couple of times before.  What have I learned?

Well, for starters, it doesn’t matter what the brand it.  I have some smaller Western Digital external storage drives that have been reliable for years and years...then, come to find out, I have other WD drives that fail, unmount, and freeze my computer.  I’ve tried a couple of other brands...thought I would try a new one from SimpleTech; however, this past weekend, this is the drive that just died on me.  No warning, no trouble period...one day, it unmounted and I could never get power to it to get it turned back on.

So, the most important lesson I’ve learned, is to back it up!  You can never do this too often or too many times.

Typically the higher capacity storage units will come with a backup program on the drive that you can use to schedule your automatic backups.  Once again, I’ve had no luck here.  I have been using Apple’s Backup 3 program for some time now and have not had any problems with it.

I can’t tell you the headaches I’ve saved by having backed up; sometimes not just once but twice!  So, for those of you who are still living on the edge and not backing up...thinking that your external storage is all you need...well, get another one and back that up.
